Booking Through Thursday (4)

Booking Through Thursday is weekly meme hosted by the Booking Through Thursday site.  It's a fun meme that proposes a weekly question for you to ponder.  And you are more than welcome to use the picture I made!  Just give me some credit :)
This week there are 2 questions:

Name a book you love in a genre you normally don’t care for. What made you decide to read it? Did it make you want to try more in that genre?
As bad as this is, I used to shy away from Classics.  I know, I know, it's terrible.  But I couldn't get into them.  There I was, a claimed avid book reader and I didn't like reading the classics.  But back in AP Literature in High School, we had to read a bunch of classics.  Most of the books I stuck to skimming through, but A Prayer For Owen Meany was my all-time favorite book that I read in school.  And I read it all the way through, word for word.  And since then I have opened up to reading more of the classics!

What genre do you avoid reading and why?
I usually tend to avoid reading adult books.  Specifically non-fiction and fiction.  Okay I guess that's all of them.  I hardly EVER read non-fiction.  I just can't get into it.  I don't usually like the whole,
based-on-a-true-story thing when reading.  Movies?  Sure.  Books?  Nada.  I can't find myself connecting with the adult genre.  As I am still a teenager myself, I find it better to relate to the YA genre and not the adult genre.  Adults have problems like mortgages and who they're going to marry and how they are going to handle the kids in the divorce.  Teens have to deal with doing their homework, keeping up their social life, falling in love, etc.  I do like mysteries and thrillers though, and the best ones of those are adult novels, but otherwise I tend to stay away.

What's your BTT?

  1. I do know what you mean about avoiding the classics. Although I love them, last year English lessons really turned me off certain classics and I still haven't read them. I usually avoid YA, but was really surprised by the one I read recently!

  2. It's interesting how many YA books are out there...when I was a teen, I read the classics and some mysteries. Also a few adult romances. There weren't any good teen books. Now I don't find those books appealing (teens) with some exceptions.
